Foil packet nachos are the easiest “everyone’s happy” park snack—fast to make, easy to customize, and basically zero dishes. They work just as well at a campsite as they do at a picnic with a grill.

Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- Tortilla chips
- Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a blend)
- Black beans or refried beans (optional)
- Salsa or pico de gallo
- Jalapeños (optional)
- Optional add-ons: cooked taco meat, pulled chicken, corn, diced onions, olives
After Cooking Toppings
- Sour cream or Greek yogurt
- Guacamole or sliced avocado
- Fresh cilantro
- Lime wedges
- Hot sauce
Equipment
- Heavy-duty aluminum foil (or double-layer regular foil)
- A grill or campfire grate
- Tongs
- Optional: a disposable foil pan (helpful for bigger batches)
Instructions
- Build your base: Tear off a large sheet of foil and lightly crimp the edges up to form a “tray.” (Or use a foil pan.)
- Layer it up: Add a layer of chips, then sprinkle cheese. Add beans/meat and a few spoonfuls of salsa. Repeat one more layer if you want.
- Seal (but don’t smash): Fold the foil up and over the top, leaving a little air space so the chips don’t get crushed.
- Heat until melty: Cook until the cheese is fully melted and everything is warmed through.
- Finish and serve: Carefully open (steam is hot). Add your cold toppings—sour cream, avocado, cilantro, lime—right before eating.
Tips & Variations
Keep chips crisp: Go lighter on wet toppings before cooking; add extra salsa after.
Make it “build-your-own”: Set out toppings buffet-style and let each group make a packet.
Easy vegetarian version: Beans + corn + extra cheese + pickled jalapeños.
Extra hearty: Add cooked meat and a second cheese layer on top.

COOK IT
Over a Campfire
Cook on a grate over hot coals—not direct flames—for steadier heat. Rotate once or twice while cooking.
OR
COOK IT
On a Grill
Use medium heat and close the lid to melt the cheese more quickly. Rotate halfway through.
Timing guide: Usually 5–10 minutes, depending on how loaded your packet is and how hot your heat source runs.
Clean Up
Let foil cool completely, then pack it out. Keep food and trash secured. Fire safety courtesy—keep flames controlled, fully extinguish your fire when you are finished.
